A devastating accident in Behala area today morning had resulted in the death of a Class II student and critical injuries to his father after being crushed by a lorry in front of their school. The tragic incident led to an outburst of anger among locals, who set fire to a police vehicle and motorcycle, and vandalized a government bus.
In response to the heated protests, the police had resorted to lathi charge on the demonstrators, exacerbating the situation. Both sides engaged in stone pelting, causing injuries to several individuals. Among the injured were four policemen and DC Traffic Rupesh Kumar, who suffered a head injury and was rushed to the hospital for a CT scan.
The aggrieved mob expressed their frustration with the police, accusing them of negligence in handling the accident and alleging that the lorry driver was let off after being apprehended. Furthermore, locals accused the police of accepting bribes. The incident has raised questions about the police's role, prompting the Kolkata Police Commissioner to visit the spot and initiate an investigation into the circumstances leading to the accident.
Reacting to the fierce protests and demands for accountability, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has personally intervened and called for a detailed report on the tragic incident. Angry parents, locals, and the headmaster of Barisha High School have expressed their grief and anger over the loss of the young student, calling for prompt action to prevent such incidents in the future.
The father who was also involved in the accident is under critical observation at hospital.
