Andhra headmaster does 50 sit-ups, blames himself for students’ poor performance & indiscipline

Chinta Ramana, headmaster of Zilla Parishad High School in Vizianagaram, performed 50 sit-ups in front of his students, questioning his own ability to teach them. The incident, captured in a 2.3-minute video, showed him blaming himself for the students’ poor academic performance and lack of discipline. The video has since gone viral, drawing reactions from various quarters.

Addressing a large gathering of students from the school stage, Ramana expressed frustration over the lack of improvement in their academics, reading, writing, and behavior despite continuous teaching efforts. “We cannot beat or scold you. We are forced to keep our hands tied. Even though we are putting in so much effort, there’s no improvement in behavior, academics, writing, or reading skills,” he stated. He then asked the students whether the problem was with them or with him, saying, “If it’s with us, I will prostrate before you. If you want, I will hold my ears and do sit-ups.” He followed through on his words by lying flat on the floor in prostration and then performing sit-ups while holding his ears.

The students, initially silent, began pleading with him to stop, saying, “Don’t, Sir, please don’t.” However, Ramana continued, completing at least 50 sit-ups. The act was widely discussed, with some commenting on the unusual nature of his approach and others emphasizing the challenges faced by teachers in maintaining discipline and improving academic standards. Ramana also urged parents to collaborate with teachers to achieve better educational outcomes.

Andhra Pradesh Minister Nara Lokesh acknowledged the headmaster’s actions and shared a message supporting efforts to improve education standards in government schools. He stated that if everyone worked together and provided encouragement, students in government schools could achieve remarkable success. He praised Ramana’s method of self-discipline as a way to understand students without resorting to punishment.
