Former US President Donald Trump was unharmed after gunshots were fired near his Florida golf club on Sunday, an incident that the FBI is investigating as an "attempted assassination." The gunfire occurred shortly before 2 p.m. local time (11:30 p.m. Indian Standard Time), as Secret Service agents spotted a man with a firearm near Trump’s golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida.
The suspect, identified as 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh, was armed with an AK-47-style rifle equipped with a scope and was positioned 300-500 yards away from Trump. According to reports, Trump was golfing at the club during the time of the incident. Secret Service agents responded quickly, escorting Trump to a secure location inside the club while engaging the suspect.
Authorities say the gunman dropped his rifle, along with two backpacks and other items, as he fled the scene. A bystander managed to capture a photo of the suspect's car and license plate, aiding police in tracking him down. Routh was later arrested in Martin County, Florida.
No injuries were reported, and officials confirmed that the suspect did not fire any shots. The FBI has since launched an investigation to determine the suspect’s motive, and federal authorities are treating the case as a serious threat to Trump’s safety.
Trump later reassured his supporters in an email, stating, "I am safe and I will never surrender." The investigation is ongoing as authorities attempt to gather more details about the suspect and the attempted assassination.
