The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted bail to TMC leader Anubrata Mondal. He was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with a cattle smuggling case. The decision was made by a bench comprising Justices Bela M Trivedi and S C Sharma.
The Supreme Court noted that Mondal has already been in jail for two years and that the trial in the matter would take an extended period. The court directed Mondal to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation and to surrender his passport to prevent any risk of fleeing the country.
Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing Mondal, argued that four charge sheets had been filed in the case, and Mondal was the only individual still in jail. He emphasized the lack of conclusive evidence directly implicating Mondal.
Additional Solicitor General S V Raju, representing the CBI, opposed the bail plea. He highlighted Mondal's influential position and alleged involvement in tampering with evidence, asserting that his release could jeopardize the investigation.
