Anurag Thakur, a Union Minister, called Rahul Gandhi a "loose cannon" and a "serial offender," and questioned whether there was a conspiracy within the Congress as to why no prominent lawyer from the party defended the former Lok Sabha MP when he was found guilty in a defamation case.
"Surprisingly, the entire battery of attorneys defended Pawan Khera, but not a single one of them moved to a higher court to defend Rahul Gandhi. Is Congress involved in a plot? Thakur questioned on Tuesday.
Thakur enquired, "Who are these people that planned the plot against Rahul Gandhi?
The union minister also brought up Gandhi's seven libel cases, which are pending in various courts despite the highest court's warning. He emphasized that neither the executive branch nor the Lok Sabha secretariat was responsible for Gandhi's disqualification.
Thakur responded to Gandhi's criticism by saying, "Some people don't know that the individual who was spoken brutally to had covered the Congress party for 15 years. He attacked the journalist and yet continues to advocate for press freedom."
Following his conviction in the 2019 criminal defamation case for his remark, "How come all thieves have Modi as the common surname?" Gandhi was barred from serving as the MP for Kerala's Wayanad last week on Friday.
The Congress, however, persisted in its criticism of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Centre, asserting that the administration is undermining democracy.
A report states that the Congress would lead a protest march from Red Fort to Town Hall at Chandni Chowk in old Delhi.
Congress members will march while carrying torches at the "Loktantra Bachao Mashal Shanti March."
