Armed forces deployed ahead of Bangladesh general elections on Sunday

In anticipation of the upcoming general elections scheduled for January 7 in Bangladesh, authorities have initiated the deployment of armed forces to ensure the electoral process unfolds in a free, fair, and peaceful manner. The main opposition party, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has intensified tensions by announcing their boycott of the elections, citing demands for an interim non-party neutral government, which was rejected by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's administration.

The army's media wing, 'Inter-Services Public Relations,' disclosed that armed forces would be stationed strategically in key locations across districts, sub-districts, and metropolitan areas.Deployments commenced on Tuesday in various districts, with the armed forces taking charge in Zia Colony and Sainik Club areas of Dhaka Cantonment starting at 8 am on Wednesday.

The armed forces are set to collaborate with the Election Commission and local administration to ensure peace and discipline during the period from January 3 to 10. In addition to the armed forces, personnel from the Coast Guard, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) will also play a role in election duties.
