Army doctor uses hair clip, pocket knife for emergency delivery on Jhansi platform

A pregnant woman travelling on the Panvel-Gorakhpur Express experienced severe labour pain on Saturday afternoon and was deboarded at Jhansi railway station. According to North Central Railway’s Jhansi Division Public Relations Officer Manoj Kumar Singh, railway staff acted swiftly after noticing the woman’s condition and brought her to the platform area in a wheelchair.

Major Dr Rohit Bachwala, a 31-year-old medical officer with the Army Medical Corps, was waiting for his train at the station when he saw the woman being wheeled in distress. Recognising the urgency of the situation, he volunteered to assist. With support from railway staff and no access to a medical facility, he conducted the delivery on the platform itself.

"With no access to a proper operation theatre, I had to rely on tools I had on me," Major Bachwala said. "To clamp the umbilical cord, I used a hair clip. A pocket knife helped me cut it after ensuring the baby was stable. The mother and child were in a precarious condition, and every second mattered."

The woman had reportedly collapsed near the lift area due to intense labour pain. A makeshift delivery space was arranged, and basic hygiene was ensured using the available resources. "There was no time to waste. We created a makeshift delivery area and ensured basic hygiene with the help of available supplies. It was divine intervention that I was present at that moment," he added.

Following the delivery, both the mother and the newborn baby girl were shifted to a local hospital by ambulance. Railway staff facilitated the arrangements. Doctors at the hospital later confirmed that both were in stable condition. After completing the emergency procedure, Major Bachwala boarded his train to Hyderabad as scheduled.
