No Dravid or Laxman, BCCI in search for overseas head coach for Indian cricket team

  • Dravid not likely to re-apply for Team India's head coach position
  • VVS Laxman has shown no interest in applying for the 3 year tenure
  • BCCI most likely to consider overseas coach options for the head coach post

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has commenced the search for Team India's next head coach following the conclusion of Rahul Dravid's tenure post the T20 World Cup. Dravid's decision not to seek another extension has left the BCCI in a quandary, with VVS Laxman also declining the role, citing potential disruptions at the NCA. This has prompted the BCCI to explore various options for Dravid's successor.

Meanwhile, Dravid's decision not to reapply for the position has further complicated matters. Citing a desire to spend more time with his family, Dravid has opted out of contention, leaving the BCCI with fewer viable options. Despite earlier assumptions favoring VVS Laxman as a natural choice, indications suggest he is unlikely to pursue the role.

Among the names considered is former Australian cricketer and current Delhi Capitals coach, Ricky Ponting. However, Ponting's reluctance stems from concerns regarding the extensive travel demands of the role, which would see the coach on the road until the 2027 World Cup. This, coupled with family commitments, poses a significant hurdle for Ponting's potential appointment.

While speculation surrounds potential candidates, including Justin Langer and Stephen Fleming, uncertainties persist regarding their willingness to assume the role. Langer has expressed interest, but hurdles remain, while Fleming seems disinclined. The possibility of an overseas coach marks a departure from traditional norms for the BCCI.
