Sonia Gandhi proposes Congress-TMC merger, Mamata Banerjee seeks time: Sources
Amid the ongoing political turmoil within the Trinamool Congress, party National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee met Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi at 10 Janpath in New Delhi on Wednesday. The meeting took place a day after Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee held discussions with former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, highlighting continued engagement between the two opposition parties.
Senior leaders from both parties indicated that the meeting focused on coordination within the INDIA bloc and discussions on its future course. The interaction comes at a politically significant moment, with the Trinamool Congress facing internal challenges and efforts underway among opposition parties to strengthen cooperation within the alliance framework.
The meeting also followed recent developments in West Bengal, where the CID conducted searches at the Trinamool Congress central office in Kalighat and at Abhishek Banerjee’s office on Camac Street as part of the investigation into the alleged Assembly signature forgery case. The searches were carried out a day before the meeting in New Delhi.
The Trinamool Congress has been facing internal unrest since the declaration of election results. A section of rebel MPs has claimed that 20 of the party’s 28 Lok Sabha members intend to form a separate bloc and support the BJP-led NDA. The situation has been further complicated by the resignations of Rajya Sabha MPs Sushmita Dev and Sukhendu Sekhar Roy from the party.
