FIR filed against Kalyan Banerjee over remarks against Amit Shah, 2021 post-poll violence claims

An FIR has been filed against Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee at Serampore Police Station in Hooghly district over alleged offensive remarks made against Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The complaint also includes allegations that Banerjee played a role in creating unrest and a disturbed law-and-order situation in the Serampore area during and after the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections. Police are examining the allegations mentioned in the complaint.

The complaint was lodged by BJP worker Bhaskar Ghosh, who sought legal action against the Serampore MP. According to the complaint, Kalyan Banerjee allegedly made repeated objectionable public remarks about Amit Shah. The complainant further alleged that Banerjee's statements during the 2021 Assembly election campaign and after the declaration of results contributed to tensions and unrest in different parts of Serampore.

According to sources at Serampore Police Station, the complaint revives allegations linked to the 2021 Assembly elections and post-election developments in the area. The complainant alleged that Banerjee's remarks encouraged hostility and contributed to a deteriorating law-and-order situation. Police have stated that the allegations will be examined and action will be taken in accordance with the findings of the inquiry.

The controversy has also extended beyond Serampore. A separate complaint was reportedly filed at Rishra Police Station by BJP councillor Manoj Singh of Ward No. 10 of Rishra Municipality. The complaint alleges that Kalyan Banerjee made derogatory remarks about Hindi-speaking people during the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election campaign, hurting the sentiments of members of the Hindi-speaking community. The complaint seeks legal action against the MP based on those allegations.
