The Higher Education Department of West Bengal has extended the tenure of the governing bodies of all state-run colleges by six months. An official notification issued on Wednesday stated that the term of these committees will now remain valid till December 31, 2025. The decision has been taken to ensure stability in college-level administration across the state.
According to the department, this extension is aimed at facilitating uninterrupted academic and administrative operations. All concerned colleges have been formally informed, allowing them to make institutional plans accordingly. The governing bodies oversee crucial decisions related to academic management, appointments, finances, and infrastructure.
On the same day, Education Minister Bratya Basu commented on the temporary closure of South Kolkata Law College following a recent gang rape incident on the premises. He stated, “Teaching should continue in the college. I need to know on what basis the governing body decided to shut the college. I hope students return to normal rhythm soon.”
The college remains closed for classroom teaching, while administrative work continues. Principal Nayana Chatterjee and faculty members are attending regularly. A five-member fact-finding team from the University of Calcutta visited the college on Wednesday. Due to the police investigation, the specific incident site remains sealed. The committee inspected other parts of the campus and held discussions with officials and the principal.
