Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, faced a setback as the Delhi High Court dismissed his petition challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the Delhi Liquor Policy case, alleging money laundering. The court upheld the ED's assertion, citing substantial evidence including statements from hawala dealers and AAP candidates in Goa elections, which suggested the diversion of funds.
Despite arguments from Kejriwal's legal team, led by Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, the court maintained that the arrest was in compliance with legal protocols, emphasizing the seriousness of the allegations against him.
The court's decision follows intense courtroom exchanges between Singhvi and Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, representing the ED, during which Singhvi accused the ED of timing the arrest to disrupt the upcoming elections and questioned the veracity of the evidence presented. Raju, on the other hand, defended the ED's actions, asserting that the investigation was still ongoing and that Kejriwal's release couldn't be immediate, given the pending legal procedures.
Despite Kejriwal's legal team arguing against the arrest's legality, the court ruled in favor of the ED, extending Kejriwal's judicial custody while affirming the ED's right to continue its investigation into the alleged money laundering.
