Asansol Railway encroachment drive halted after INTTUC-led protest forces team to retreat

A Railway team, along with the Railway Protection Force (RPF), reached near the Eastern Railway School gate in Asansol to clear shops allegedly set up using the boundary wall of railway premises. The operation was aimed at removing encroachments considered to be illegal by the Railway authorities.

The clearance drive faced opposition led by INTTUC leader Raju Ahluwalia, who was joined by local market committee member Pintu Gupta. Following resistance from the group, the Railway team was unable to proceed with the removal and returned from the spot.

Railway officials stated that encroachment on railway land is not permitted. In response, Raju Ahluwalia said the land in question does not belong to the Railways and asserted, “We will not allow livelihoods to be destroyed. Railways should first demolish illegally constructed buildings on its own land. Big people are allowed to occupy railway land, but poor shopkeepers are being targeted.”
