The family of 42-year-old Ashok Shaw, who tragically lost his life inside the Amherst Street police station, has approached the Calcutta High Court seeking intervention and the transfer of the investigation into the custody death to an impartial agency. Ashok Shaw had been summoned to the police station in connection with a mobile theft case, as the police claimed the used phone he recently purchased was reported stolen.
The family's legal representative, Priyanka Tibrewal, revealed that their demands include the release of CCTV footage from the police station, an inquest at AIIMS Kalyani, and the transfer of the investigation to an external agency. Allegations of police torture have been levied by the grieving family, prompting the call for an impartial investigation.
The move to involve the Calcutta High Court comes after Ashok Shaw's untimely death on November 15 while in police custody. The family seeks transparency and justice as they navigate the aftermath of this tragedy, emphasizing the need for an unbiased examination of the circumstances leading to Shaw's demise within the police station.
