No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
Police from Lalgola police station in Murshidabad have initiated proceedings to seize properties belonging to the in-laws of the daughter of suspended MLA and Janata Unnayan Party chairman Humayun Kabir, in connection with an alleged drug trafficking case. The action, launched on Monday, has triggered political reactions across the district.
According to police, the move is based on allegations that properties worth more than ₹10 crore belong to Shariful Islam, the father-in-law of Kabir’s daughter, and were acquired through proceeds of illegal narcotics trade. Investigators claim the seizure process follows findings made during an ongoing probe into a drug racket operating in the area.
Police further stated that in 2025, a relative of Shariful Islam, identified as Jiaur Rahman, was arrested around 500 metres from Islam’s residence with about 500 grams of narcotic substances, valued at nearly ₹1 crore. During subsequent investigations, police allegedly uncovered information linking Shariful Islam to drug trafficking activities, prompting the current action.
