A devastating fire broke out at Laxmi Market Complex on Grand Road in Puri district, Odisha, last night, causing extensive damage to at least 40 shops. The fire reportedly originated in a garment store on the complex's first floor at around 9 pm on Wednesday.
According to a police officer, three people were rescued by firefighters from the roof of the building in an unconscious state. The building, situated near the Jagannath temple, also houses a hotel and a bank on separate floors. Fortunately, around 106 tourists from Nashik city in Maharashtra, who were staying at the hotel, were rescued safely.
The Fire Services Director General, SK Upadhyay, reported that three firefighters involved in the operation fell ill due to the intense heat and smoke and had to be taken to the hospital. Despite the best efforts of the firefighters, the flames quickly spread to nearby buildings. The fire services personnel worked tirelessly to contain the fire, which continued to burn throughout the night.
The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, and an investigation has been initiated to determine the exact reason behind the outbreak. The incident has caused significant financial losses to the affected shop owners and has left them devastated. The local authorities have assured them of all possible help and support in their time of need.
