State Agriculture Minister Sovandeb Chatterjee stirred controversy on Tuesday by labeling the recent attack on ED officials during raids in Sandeshkhali as an "explosion of public anger." His remarks, suggesting potential future attacks during agency operations nationwide, have ignited a heated debate.
Chatterjee, while interacting with the media asserted that such outbursts of public anger witnessed in Sandeshkhali could happen in other places in India in the future. He asserted that his organization, representing students, youth, and labor, will confront this alleged misuse of investigative agencies.
"The recent attack on ED team during a raid in Sandeshkhali was an explosion of public anger. We have seen this outburst of public anger at one part of the state. In near future such incidents might happen in other parts of the country as well", said Chatterjee.
The minister accused the central agency of acting at the behest of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He pointed to a supposed CAG report highlighting corruption during the BJP's tenure, dismissing the current controversy as insignificant compared to the alleged lapses under the previous government.
While, Trinamool spokesperson Kunal Ghosh defending Chatterjee's statement, clarified that the minister did not endorse attacks but questioned why investigations are only against opposition leaders and couldn't be extended to Shubhendu Adhikari.
