Attacker entered India via Meghalaya, used Bengal Aadhaar for SIM before attacking Saif Ali Khan

Shariful Islam Shehzad Mohammad Rohilla Amin Fakir, a Bangladeshi national, was arrested for the violent attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan at his Bandra residence on January 18, 2025. Fakir illegally crossed the Dawki River, which is located on the India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya, approximately seven months ago. After entering India, he used the Aadhaar card of a West Bengal resident, Khukumoni Jahangir Sekh, to obtain a SIM card registered under Sekh's name. Investigators suspect Fakir used this document to gain access to mobile services and conceal his true identity.

Fakir, who assumed the alias "Bijoy Das" after entering India, spent some time in West Bengal, where he reportedly tried to obtain his own Aadhaar card but was unsuccessful. He then traveled to Mumbai in search of work, deliberately choosing jobs that did not require any official documentation. Fakir worked as a housekeeping staff member in various pubs and hotels in the Thane and Worli areas with the assistance of a local labor contractor named Amit Pandey. Initially, Fakir claimed to be from Kolkata, but his phone records later revealed multiple outgoing calls to Bangladesh-based numbers, which helped confirm his Bangladeshi nationality.

On January 18, 2025, Fakir attempted a robbery at Saif Ali Khan's apartment in the Satguru Sharan building, located in the Bandra area of Mumbai. During the attempted burglary, a confrontation between Fakir and Saif Ali Khan escalated into a violent altercation. Fakir allegedly stabbed the actor six times, with deep wounds to Saif’s left hand and neck. Following the attack, Saif was rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where he underwent multiple surgeries. Doctors confirmed that the actor was out of danger and is recovering.

Prior to the attack on Saif Ali Khan, Fakir reportedly attempted to break into a nearby bungalow belonging to another Bollywood celebrity but was thwarted by barking dogs. After the stabbing, Fakir allegedly hid in the building's garden for approximately two hours. Following a three-day manhunt, Fakir was traced to Thane, where he was arrested. Authorities used a combination of mobile phone records, UPI transaction data for food, and information from the labor contractor to track him down.

Fakir’s illegal entry into India, his use of a false identity, and his involvement in the attack on Saif Ali Khan have raised concerns regarding border security and the effectiveness of immigration controls. Fakir's entry through Meghalaya, a region often considered a sensitive area for illegal border crossings, highlights potential vulnerabilities in India's border management. Investigators are continuing to gather information regarding Fakir’s network and movements within India, as well as the role of any accomplices or facilitators who may have assisted him in entering the country and securing employment. Authorities are also reviewing the processes for verifying Aadhaar card applications and the monitoring of cross-border movements.
