Kolkata Airport makes history by welcoming first Giant Airbus Beluga XL
In response to a question posed by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam MP Andimuthu Raja during the Lok Sabha question hour, Union Minister of Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya Scindia informed the Lok Sabha that a mere 0.7% of commercial flights in the country were cancelled this year.
Minister Scindia elaborated on the reasons for cancellations, citing 0.3% due to weather, 0.2% each for commercial and operational reasons, and 0.2% for technical issues. He highlighted the growth in the aviation sector, noting that the fleet size had doubled in the last decade, and air traffic movements per week increased by 22% over the last two years.
The Union minister noted that two elements needed to be taken care of in the event of a cancellation or a delay – airport security concerns, which were integral to the security of the nation, and the inconvenience caused to passengers.
Scindia said that the issue had arisen due to the most severe fog conditions, but that both the airline and the airport had been fined because of the infringement on airport security and inconvenience caused to passengers.
