No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
The Allahabad High Court has granted senior Samajwadi Party leader and former cabinet minister Mohammad Azam Khan bail, a decision that paves the way for his imminent release from jail. The ruling came in the highly controversial "Quality Bar occupation" case in Rampur, marking a major legal victory for the veteran politician. The granting of bail in all pending cases is expected to trigger a new wave of political activity, particularly in Rampur and the western parts of Uttar Pradesh, where Azam Khan holds considerable influence.
The decision was delivered by a single bench of Justice Sameer Jain, who heard the arguments from both the defense and the prosecution. Azam Khan's lawyers, Imran Ullah and Mohammad Khalid, presented a strong case for his bail. They argued that their client had been a victim of a political vendetta and had been falsely implicated in a series of cases.
The prosecution, on the other hand, vehemently opposed the bail plea, citing the seriousness of the charges against the former minister. The case pertains to the alleged illegal occupation of the "Quality Bar" property in Rampur, an incident that has been a focal point of the legal battles Azam Khan has faced over the past few years.
This legal relief comes after a previous setback for Azam Khan. He had initially applied for bail in the MP-MLA court of Uttar Pradesh, but his petition was rejected on May 17, 2025. Following the rejection, his legal team decided to approach the Allahabad High Court, a move that has now paid off. The case was argued for several weeks, with the court reserving its decision on August 21st. The verdict has now been announced, granting him bail.
The news of his release from jail is likely to be met with jubilation by his supporters and the Samajwadi Party cadre, who have long maintained his innocence. For the SP, Azam Khan's release is a major boost, as he is considered a key strategist and a prominent Muslim face of the party in the state. His presence on the ground could be a game-changer for the party in the run-up to the next elections.
