Bail denied in ration scam, ED links Former Minister to massive corruption network

Former West Bengal Food Minister Jyotipriyo Mallik’s bail plea in the ongoing ration distribution scam has been rejected by the court. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) opposed his release, presenting strong evidence connecting him to the multi-layered corruption network. The ED has accused Mallik of orchestrating the ration scam, which involved the misappropriation of subsidized food grains meant for distribution to the poor. Investigations have revealed that the scam was carried out through a complex web of fake companies and fraudulent financial transactions.

The ED described Mallik’s associate, Balur, as a key figure in the network, stating that the entire scheme was orchestrated behind the scenes by Mallik. The agency provided detailed financial records, including bank transactions and the creation of shell companies, which allegedly helped divert the funds from the ration distribution system. These funds were then laundered through various channels, with Mallik accused of using his position to facilitate and conceal the illicit financial activities.

Mallik had previously been hospitalized at SSKM Hospital due to health issues, and after his arrest, was transferred to Presidency Jail. He applied for bail on medical grounds, citing his deteriorating health, but the ED repeatedly opposed his release, claiming that he was using his condition as a pretext to avoid custody. The agency presented medical reports to argue that Mallik’s health was being adequately managed in jail, and his release could impede the investigation.

The ongoing investigation by the ED also focuses on identifying other individuals and entities involved in the scam. The agency has questioned several others, including individuals linked to Mallik’s network, and is tracing the movement of illicit funds through various financial institutions. The ED has stated that more arrests and charges are expected as the investigation continues. The case remains under judicial scrutiny, and further developments are anticipated as new evidence is being processed.
