Kolkata may witness a possible shift in the venue of its main Eid-ul-Zuha congregational prayer, which has traditionally been held at Red Road for decades. According to the report, the proposed change would move the gathering to Brigade Parade Ground this year, subject to favourable weather conditions and final administrative approval. The event is scheduled for May 28, and discussions are ongoing regarding the final location.
The decision is being considered through high-level consultations between the Kolkata Police and organisers, the Calcutta Khilafat Committee. Authorities are examining logistical concerns including crowd management, traffic regulation and security arrangements, which have prompted the exploration of alternative open spaces for the large congregation.
Sources indicated that police had requested organisers to evaluate multiple venues near Red Road to ensure smooth movement of traffic and public convenience. During deliberations, options such as Brigade Parade Ground, Shaheed Minar Maidan and Gangasagar fair grounds were discussed as possible alternatives for the prayer gathering.
Committee secretary Nasir Ahmed stated that several rounds of discussions have already taken place with the administration, and a final decision is still pending. Police officials also indicated that the venue selection process is in its final stage, with only technical approvals remaining before confirmation.
According to police headquarters in Lalbazar, Brigade Parade Ground has emerged as the leading option, with preparations being made accordingly and necessary permissions from Army authorities reportedly secured. However, officials remain cautious due to weather forecasts predicting possible heavy rainfall, which could impact open-ground arrangements. A backup plan is also being prepared, while traditional arrangements at Red Road have remained in place for decades except during the Covid-19 period.
