Bangladesh to hold national election on Feb 12, 2026, first after Hasina's ouster on Aug 5, 2024

Bangladesh is gearing up for a landmark moment in its democracy as the Election Commission has officially confirms today about the country's 13th parliamentary elections, sets for February 12, 2026, marking the first national vote since the violent 2024 student-led uprising or Quota Reform Movement that toppled longtime Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and forced her into exile in India. Announced by Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin in a national broadcast, this date comes just over a year after the interim government under Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus took the reins, promising a path back to elected rule amid ongoing challenges like economic recovery and political realignments. On the same day, voters will also participate in a historic national referendum on the 'July Charter' – a comprehensive reform blueprint crafted in the uprising's aftermath – adding extra weight to what could be a defining day for the nation's 173 million people, CEC AMM Nasir Uddin confirms

The July Charter, at the core of the referendum, outlines bold institutional overhauls aimed at preventing past abuses of power: limiting executive authority, bolstering judicial and electoral independence, and curbing misuse of law enforcement. This dual ballot – election and referendum – reflects the interim administration's push for deeper systemic change while addressing mounting public frustration over reform delays that have sparked fresh protests. Politically, the landscape has shifted dramatically: Khaleda Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) emerges as the clear frontrunner, capitalizing on alliances and public sentiment, while the once-banned Jamaat-e-Islami party returns to the fray after their ban restrictions were lifted, following a 2013 court ruling that had sidelined it for clashing with secular principles. Meanwhile, the students-led National Citizen Party (NCP) struggles to translate its revolutionary energy into votes.

Tensions persist, particularly with Sheikh Hasina's Awami League Party as they have been barred from contesting elections, prompting threats of unrest from its supporters who view the ban as punitive. This year on May 10th, Muhammad Yunus led Bangladesh's interim government haa banned all activities of the Awami League in cyberspace and elsewhere under the Anti-Terrorism Act until the International Crimes Tribunal completes the trial of the party and its leaders. In continuation of this step, on 12th May, the Bangladesh Election Commission suspended the registration of the Awami League as a party.

Now, the key voter concerns includes reviving the economy – battered by unrest that hit the vital garment export sector – tackling rampant corruption, restoring news media freedoms, and mending strained ties with important neighbour India, which continues to host Hasina since Aug 5, 2024 leading to extreme strained by New Delhi for sheltering Hasina. As Bangladesh approaches this pivotal February showdown, the outcome will not only determine the next government but also test whether the post-uprising reforms can forge a more equitable and stable democracy, or if lingering divisions will overshadow the transition.
