A former intelligence agent from Bangladesh, identified as Ashraful Alam, was detained near the Baingdubi Army Camp in Bagdogra on Friday. Alam is a resident of Rangpur district in Bangladesh and was found roaming near the Field Ordnance Depot (Five FOD), a restricted military area. He reportedly approached residents in the nearby MM Terai village to ask for water, following which locals informed the army authorities. Army personnel responded and apprehended him from the vicinity.
During preliminary questioning, the detained individual identified himself as a former Bangladeshi intelligence agent. He claimed to have entered India illegally around six months ago by crossing the river through the Rajshahi border. According to sources, no valid identity documents or legal entry papers were found on him at the time of his arrest. The army subsequently handed him over to the Bagdogra police station for further legal proceedings.
Police officials have initiated an investigation to verify his identity, background, and the details of his stay in India over the past six months. Authorities are currently examining how he managed to remain undetected and whether any local contacts were involved. Further questioning is underway, and relevant agencies have been informed for verification and follow-up.
