Mumbai Police have arrested Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, a 30-year-old man, in connection with the stabbing of Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan. The incident occurred on January 16, at 2 am in Khan’s 12th-floor apartment at the ‘Satguru Sharan’ building in Bandra. Shehzad allegedly entered the residence intending to commit burglary. Saif Ali Khan sustained six stab injuries, including wounds to his neck and shoulder, and was rushed to Lilavati Hospital. Doctors performed emergency surgery and removed a 2.5-inch knife fragment from his spine. He is now out of danger.
The police revealed that Shehzad, suspected to be a Bangladeshi national, entered India illegally and was using multiple aliases, including Vijay Das and Bijoy Das, to avoid detection. He arrived in Mumbai 5-6 months ago, stayed briefly in the city, and later moved to its outskirts. During this time, he worked at a housekeeping agency and was employed at Ricky’s Bar in Thane before the incident.
Two knife fragments were recovered from the crime scene, including one from the children’s room in the actor’s residence. These fragments have been sent for forensic examination and fingerprint analysis. Investigators also recovered items from the accused during his arrest in Thane West, which point to his suspected Bangladeshi origin. Police reported that no valid Indian identification documents were found on Shehzad.
The investigation includes probing how Shehzad managed to bypass security measures at the high-rise building. Authorities are also examining whether the accused acted alone or had accomplices. Relevant sections under the Passport Act have been added to the case to address his illegal entry into India.
Shehzad was apprehended in the Labour Camp area of Thane West and has been remanded to police custody for further questioning. The police are tracing his movements, verifying his background, and analyzing evidence to establish the full sequence of events. Additional measures are being taken to secure the actor’s residence and examine potential lapses in security protocols.
