Barrackpore Metro work stalls over BT Road pipelines; No breakthrough in KMC meeting

A high-level meeting was held at the Kolkata Municipal Corporation office today to review the progress of the Barrackpore Metro project. The meeting was attended by senior officials including the Additional General Manager of Railways, officials from the PWD department, the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) of Barrackpore, the Commissioner of Police (CP) of Barrackpore, along with representatives from the Urban Development Department and the Metro Rail Authority.

The 12.5-kilometre metro corridor has been delayed due to the presence of three underground pipelines along BT Road, which must be shifted before metro pillar construction can begin. Officials stated that a clear roadmap for pipeline relocation between Kolkata Municipal Corporation and Railway University has not yet been finalised. Mayor Firhad Hakim called the meeting to address this issue, but no conclusive decision was taken during the discussions.

The Railway Minister had earlier requested the state government to extend cooperation in resolving land and utility-related matters for the project. However, no concrete steps have been taken to facilitate the work. As a result, construction work on the Barrackpore Metro line currently remains halted.
