A 17-year-old boy from Basti district, Uttar Pradesh, identified as Aditya, died by suicide after being allegedly subjected to severe harassment at a birthday party in his village. According to his family, on December 20, Aditya was invited to a birthday celebration, where he was reportedly stripped naked, beaten, and urinated on by several individuals. The family claims that despite the severity of the abuse, their attempts to file a police complaint were rejected.
Aditya’s uncle, Vijay Kumar, said the boy returned home late that night and shared the traumatic details of the incident the following morning. He further stated that the family immediately went to the local police station to report the abuse. “We went to the police station to file a complaint, but our complaint wasn’t registered,” Kumar said. The family alleges that their request for assistance was ignored, with no action taken by the police.
According to Kumar, the harassment continued for three days after the abuse. The family alleges that the failure to have the complaint officially recorded by the police allowed the harassment to persist, which ultimately led to Aditya’s decision to take his own life. “The authorities did not register our complaint for three days, and the harassment continued,” Kumar added, suggesting that the ongoing mistreatment contributed to the tragedy.
The local police, led by Circle Officer (CO) Pradeep Kumar Tripathi, have confirmed that a case has been registered in connection with the suicide. “A boy died by suicide, and a case has been registered in PS Kaptanganj. A case has been registered under relevant sections, and the reason is suspected to be mutual differences,” Tripathi stated. The police are investigating all aspects of the case, including the allegations of abuse and the failure to take action on the family’s complaint.
The investigation is ongoing, with authorities focusing on the details of the harassment and the response of the police. The incident has drawn attention to the alleged inaction of law enforcement and the treatment of the victim by the accused individuals. The police have assured that they are thoroughly examining the case and will provide further updates as the investigation progresses.
