BCCI bans match-day practice, tightens family access rules ahead of IPL 2026

Ahead of the 2026 season of the Indian Premier League, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has introduced a series of strict operational guidelines for all ten franchises, significantly tightening rules around practice sessions, player conduct, and access control. The new directives, issued just days before the tournament begins on March 28, have sparked discussion among teams due to their immediate implementation and wide-ranging impact on preparations.

One of the most significant changes is the complete ban on practice sessions on match days. Teams have also been prohibited from conducting fitness tests on the main square during match days, a move aimed at preserving pitch conditions and ensuring uniform playing surfaces. Additionally, strict rules have been enforced regarding practice facilities, with teams barred from using nets or wickets allocated to opponents, even if those remain unused.

The guidelines further detail structured practice arrangements at venues such as Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, where each team will be allotted two practice nets and one side wicket for range hitting. If both teams train simultaneously, equal distribution of practice wickets will be ensured. These measures are designed to maintain fairness and prevent overuse of specific areas of the pitch during the tournament.

The BCCI has also introduced restrictions concerning players’ families and support staff. Family members and friends will not be allowed access to the field or dressing rooms during training sessions and must watch from designated hospitality areas. Players have been instructed to travel to venues strictly via team buses, while only accredited personnel will be permitted access to operational zones, reinforcing tighter security and discipline protocols.

In addition to training and access rules, the board has emphasized adherence to presentation and dress code norms. Players must comply with official requirements, including wearing Orange and Purple Caps during matches and post-match ceremonies. These combined measures reflect a comprehensive effort by the BCCI to standardize operations, enhance professionalism, and maintain competitive integrity throughout the IPL 2026 season.
