BCCI bars players from staying with families during T20 World Cup: Report

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has barred players from staying with their families during the T20 World Cup 2026, adhering to the strict policy introduced after India’s 1-3 loss to Australia in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The Indian team management reportedly approached the board to seek clarity on whether wives and fiancées could travel and stay with players, but the BCCI rejected the request, allowing families to make separate arrangements instead.

Under the current guidelines, players are permitted to have their families join them only for a maximum of 14 days if the overseas tour lasts longer than 45 days. This policy was introduced after concerns arose that some players were unavailable for internal meetings and planning sessions during earlier tours because they chose to remain with their families. The rules aim to ensure players remain fully focused on cricket during high-stakes tournaments.

During the ongoing T20 World Cup, the Indian team will travel exclusively via private charter. Several players have retained personal chefs, but meals are being prepared at nearby hotels and delivered to the team. These arrangements are part of the BCCI’s effort to create a controlled and distraction-free environment, with strict attention to nutrition and daily routines.

The T20 World Cup began on February 7, with India defeating the USA in their opening match at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. The team is scheduled to play group-stage matches in India before traveling to Colombo to face Pakistan on February 15. While the players have shown promising performances on the field, the absence of family support has added a personal challenge to the tournament.

This strict approach highlights the BCCI’s priority on discipline and mental focus over player comfort. Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic, family stays had been allowed during tours, but the Australian series loss prompted a reassessment of protocols. The board hopes that by limiting external distractions, players will maintain heightened focus and deliver optimal performances throughout the World Cup.
