In a significant development that marks the end of a prolonged administrative deadlock in West Bengal’s higher education sector, permanent Vice-Chancellors (VCs) have finally been appointed to eight major universities across the state. This crucial decision was facilitated by an instruction from the Supreme Court, providing a resolution to the ongoing conflict and confusion that had left institutions, including the prestigious University of Calcutta and Jadavpur University, operating under temporary leadership. The appointments aim to restore stability and standard governance to these key centers of learning.

For an extended period, these universities were being managed by interim or acting VCs, primarily due to the complex tussle between the State Government and the Governor's office—the latter being the official Chancellor of state universities. The appointment of a permanent VC requires the approval of the Governor on the proposals forwarded by the State Government, a process that had stalled, dragging the matter into the legal arena.

The stalemate had severely impacted academic planning, administrative efficiency, and long-term decision-making at these high-profile institutions. The Supreme Court's intervention became necessary to untangle the bureaucratic and political knots, urging the Raj Bhavan to approve the state's proposals and resolve the leadership crisis in the interest of the thousands of students and faculty members.

Following the Supreme Court’s directive, the path was cleared, and the list of eight permanent Vice-Chancellors was officially announced. This list includes key figures for the most prominent universities, signaling a return to full-fledged leadership. For instance, Ashutosh Ghosh has been named the VC of Calcutta University, and Chiranjib Bhattacharya takes charge at Jadavpur University, while Om Prakash Mishra has been appointed to the North Bengal University.

Other notable appointments include Arnab Sen for Raiganj University, Ashis Bhattacharya for Gour Banga University, Uday Bandyopadhyay for Kazi Nazrul University, Chandradipa Ghosh for Sadhu Ramchand Murmu University, and Abu Taleb for Biswa Bangla University. These appointments are expected to immediately stabilize the administrative functions of these institutions.
