Bengal Assembly will give away 'Best MLA' award based on performance

In an unprecedented decision, the West Bengal Legislative Assembly will annually award the title of 'Best MLA' to recognize exemplary performance by legislators. Speaker Rathindra Bose made the announcement on the floor of the House on Thursday, outlining a new framework aimed at encouraging active participation across both treasury and opposition benches throughout the Assembly's five-year term.

To ensure objectivity and transparency, the state assembly will engage an external agency to monitor and evaluate the work of each member. The evaluation criteria will primarily focus on two aspects: the legislator's attendance and active role during Assembly sessions, as well as the specific development work and public welfare initiatives undertaken within their respective constituencies. The agency will compile detailed assessment reports, which will serve as the basis for selecting the recipient each year.

Addressing the House, Speaker Bose highlighted the importance of parliamentary learning, particularly for the 181 first-time members following the 2026 assembly elections. He encouraged newly elected representatives to learn from experienced senior legislators on how to effectively leverage the Assembly platform to address local grievances and promote state-wide development.
