West Bengal’s Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal is set to undertake an aerial survey of key districts ahead of the first phase of Assembly elections to assess poll preparedness. The review, scheduled for April 20 and 21, will cover multiple districts including Paschim Medinipur, Malda, Uttar Dinajpur and Cooch Behar, as part of efforts to ensure readiness on the ground.
Officials said the decision to use a helicopter was taken due to time constraints, allowing faster access to multiple locations compared to road travel. This marks a rare administrative move, with a similar aerial review last conducted nearly two decades ago in 2006 by then CEO Debashis Sen. The step is aimed at directly evaluating security arrangements, infrastructure, and logistical preparedness in poll-bound districts.
The initiative comes amid heightened focus by the Election Commission of India on conducting peaceful and transparent elections. Authorities have reiterated strict adherence to guidelines, warning of action against any lapses under political influence. District police officials have also been directed to respond firmly to any signs of unrest, as the Commission seeks to maintain order and ensure a free and fair electoral process across the state.
