Bengal government switches to mobile-based geo-fencing attendance for employees

The West Bengal state government is introducing a mobile-based geo-fencing attendance system for its employees, eliminating the need to install separate biometric hardware machines in offices. Under the new framework, employees can record their attendance directly using a mobile application while within office premises. The Finance Department recently issued a notification instructing all state departments to review their software solutions for early implementation to simplify the process and save government funds.

The shift to geo-fencing technology comes after previously installed biometric machines faced frequent technical glitches and maintenance issues across several departments. The app-based system allows attendance logging exclusively within predefined office boundaries, ensuring timely presence and transparent record-keeping. The Finance Department has already initiated the process of sending this directive to all government departments.

This update follows strict attendance measures previously introduced by Nabanna, including mandatory face recognition systems implemented on June 15. Under the updated guidelines, arriving between 10:15 AM and 11:00 AM will be marked as 'late', while arriving after 11:00 AM will be treated as 'absent'. Additionally, leaving office before 5:15 PM will be considered an 'early departure' for all officers and employees.
