Another KMC councillor, Biswajit Mondal arrested, after woman alleges molestation and threats
The West Bengal government announced a new panel of government lawyers for the Calcutta High Court, appointing senior advocate Rajdeep Majumdar as Additional Advocate General. The appointments were made through an official notification issued on Wednesday and came into effect immediately. Along with Majumdar’s appointment, Kallol Mondal was appointed as Public Prosecutor, while Nilanjan Bhattacharya was named Senior Standing Counsel.
Rajdeep Majumdar had earlier served as Deputy Solicitor General at the Calcutta High Court and has represented parties in several major cases before the court. Lawyer Dibyendu Narayan was also appointed as government counsel under the revised legal panel announced by the state government. The appointments followed administrative changes after the formation of the new government in West Bengal.
Kallol Mondal, who was appointed Public Prosecutor, is known for handling criminal matters before the court. The reshuffle in the government’s legal team introduced several new appointments in positions responsible for representing the state government in court proceedings. Government lawyers are responsible for presenting the administration’s policies, legal positions and responses before judicial forums, including the Calcutta High Court.
The reconstitution of the legal panel came at a time when multiple important matters were pending before the Calcutta High Court. Hearings were continuing in cases related to the teacher recruitment scam, alleged financial irregularities, administrative decisions, post-poll violence, the RG Kar case and various public interest litigations involving the role of the state government.
The appointments were announced as part of broader administrative changes following the change in government in the state. Legal and administrative circles viewed the formation of the new panel as a restructuring of the state’s representation before the Calcutta High Court in matters involving ongoing litigation and government policy-related cases.
