Bengal Govt set to bring motion against Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita

The Trinamool Congress-led West Bengal government is set to introduce a new motion on the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita at the state legislative Assembly under Rule 169 on July 30, according to sources on Saturday. This follows earlier motions during the monsoon session regarding the 2024 NEET UG paper leak scam and Indo-Bhutan water distribution.

A senior TMC leader highlighted Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's concern that the Central Government should allow more time before enforcing the new criminal laws, viewing the current approach as anti-federalist. The motion is expected to urge the Centre to delay implementing the three laws, allowing states more time for preparation.

Mamata Banerjee had earlier established a committee, led by retired judge Ashim Kumar Roy, to review the new criminal laws: The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, The Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), 2023, and The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023.

The Chief Minister has also written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting a postponement of these laws and calling for renewed deliberation in Parliament.
