On September 3, the state government will introduce a bill in the assembly demanding the enactment of an anti-rape law, with a provision for the immediate hanging of convicted rapists. The decision was made during a special cabinet meeting, and the bill is expected to be presented and passed during an extra session of the assembly scheduled for September 2 and 3.
Once the bill is passed, it will be promptly sent to the Raj Bhavan for approval on the same day, underscoring the urgency with which the government is approaching the issue of sexual violence.
During the cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also directed that the injured policemen from the Nabanna Abhiyan protests be visited in the hospital. Firhad Hakim will visit CMRI, and Shobhandev Chattopadhyay will visit Fortis to check on their condition.
Earlier, during a mega event of Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), Mamata announced that she would pass the bill within 10 days. "We will send this Bill to the Governor. If he doesn't pass, we will sit outside Raj Bhavan," she added.
