A special session of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly is scheduled to begin on August 8 and may continue till August 21, according to sources. The session is being convened to address allegations of atrocities against Bengali-speaking migrant workers. Alongside the proposal concerning migrant workers, four key bills are expected to be introduced during the session.
Discussions are currently underway between the Parliamentary Affairs Department and the Law Department to finalise the drafts of these bills. Once the drafting process is complete, Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee is expected to formally announce the session dates and agenda.
Meanwhile, a separate issue concerning the control of the State Election Commission office by the state government has triggered debate. On Wednesday, Speaker Biman Banerjee said, “When the state government appoints employees in that office and pays their salaries, it is impossible for there to be no control.” He added that the matter is controversial and information is being collected.
