Bidhannagar Mayor Krishna Chakraborty resigns, another massive blow to TMC
The political landscape of West Bengal has undergone a seismic shift as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a thumping majority in the 2026 Assembly Elections. According to the latest data from the Election Commission, the BJP has claimed 207 seats out of the total 294 constituencies (293* currently, as Falta will undergo fresh polls). This landslide victory marks the first time the saffron party will take the reins of power in the state with such a significant mandate.
The incumbent All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) faced a severe setback, with its tally dropping to just 80 seats. The results indicate a clear wave of anti-incumbency and a decisive preference for the BJP's narrative across both rural and urban belts. The massive gap between the two primary contenders underscores a complete reorganization of the state's traditional political order.
Other political players struggled to make an impact in what became a highly polarized contest. The Indian National Congress (INC) and AJUP managed to secure 2 seats each, while the CPI(M) and AISF were relegated to just 1 seat apiece. These figures reflect a near-total marginalization of the Third Front and smaller parties, as voters consolidated behind the two main blocks.
