Bengal on high alert for Ram Navami: 3,000 police deployed, strict curbs on processions

West Bengal has tightened security arrangements across the state ahead of Ram Navami celebrations, deploying around 3,000 police personnel and imposing strict restrictions on processions to ensure law and order during the politically sensitive period. Authorities have capped participation in processions at 500 individuals and prohibited the carrying of weapons, warning of immediate action against any violations.

Surveillance has been significantly intensified in identified sensitive zones, including Howrah, Chandannagar, and Islampur, where authorities anticipate heightened activity. Central forces have been placed on standby and will be deployed if required. Officials indicated that processions violating prescribed guidelines will be halted on the spot, with legal consequences for organisers.

A high-level review meeting was conducted at the state secretariat, bringing together senior administrative and police officials, including the chief secretary, home secretary, director general of police, and district authorities. The meeting focused on ensuring strict adherence to court-mandated guidelines and preparedness across districts, especially with multiple processions expected over two days.

Ram Navami processions are scheduled to take place across the state from March 26 to March 29, with peak activity anticipated over the next two days. Authorities have directed district administrations to maintain strict vigilance and coordination to prevent any untoward incidents, particularly in the backdrop of the ongoing election atmosphere.
