The Burari case, a mass suicide where 11 members of a family committed mass suicide is still fresh in people's memory. A rerun of the case has been witnessed in Kolkata on Wednesday. Romi Dey and Sudeshna Dey, the two women of the ill-fated family, and a teenage girl were found dead with their wrists slit. What makes it more frightening is that the husbands of Romi and Sudeshna, identified as Pranoy Dey and Prasun Dey, who are brothers, and a kid were traveling in their car and deliberately hit a pillar, reportedly to kill themselves.
The three male victims, however, were rescued and rushed to a hospital for treatment. Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma stated that the mystery would only unravel after receiving the post-mortem report. He also mentioned that a reconstruction of events will take place soon. The Police Commissioner said, “Three injured family members are currently undergoing treatment in the hospital. Once they recover slightly, we will reconstruct the incident. For now, we are verifying their statements.” He further added that no suicide note was found at the scene, but the mobile phones of all family members have been collected for investigation, and CCTV footage from the area is also being examined.
As per the reports, the Dey family had been long-time residents of Tangra. Two brothers, Pranoy Dey and Prasun Dey were engaged in the leather business. On Wednesday morning, the bodies of Romi, Sudeshna, and a minor daughter of the family were recovered from separate rooms of their four-story house. Romi and Sudeshna’s wrists were slit, and marks were found on their necks. The minor girl had foam coming out of her mouth, with injuries near her lips and under her nose.
Pranoy and Prasun claimed that they had attempted suicide by consuming sedative-laced payesh (kheer). However, many questions remain—why did they take such an extreme step? Why did they leave the house after consuming the dessert? Police are also investigating possible financial distress as a motive. The case remains under intense scrutiny as officials work to piece together the truth behind the tragic incident.
