Bengal’s first loop bridge in Bagrakote draws crowds, photo ban and parking restrictions imposed

Bengal’s first loop bridge is currently under construction in Bagrakote, a region within the Duars of Jalpaiguri district. The bridge, part of a significant infrastructure project along National Highway 10, is attracting large numbers of tourists daily due to its unique design and stunning hilltop views. Since the start of the New Year, the bridge has become a major attraction for visitors hoping to capture photographs and selfies, even though construction work is still in progress.

The increasing tourist traffic has created serious logistical issues in managing the crowds. Vehicles are often parked along the road, obstructing traffic and creating safety hazards. In response to these concerns, the district administration has issued a ban on parking vehicles within half a kilometer of the loop bridge. Additionally, the authorities have prohibited tourists from taking photographs within the restricted zone to prevent further disruption and to ensure public safety as the site remains under construction.

On January 2, a car overturned in the vicinity of the bridge while navigating the area, resulting in 13 injuries. This accident raised concerns about the current safety of the site, as the bridge and surrounding roads are still under development. The access roads to the bridge are not fully completed, and the lack of proper safety infrastructure at the site increases the risk of such accidents. As part of their response, authorities have emphasized the need for caution and adherence to safety measures while the construction progresses.

The loop bridge is part of a larger project aimed at improving connectivity between the India-China border region and the rest of the country. It is being constructed on National Highway 10, which serves as an alternative route for military convoys and other critical traffic traveling to and from Nathu La. The bridge, when completed, will significantly enhance road access for both civilian and military purposes. This strategic importance has drawn attention to the site, causing an increase in the number of visitors despite the ongoing construction.

Local residents of Bagrakote and surrounding areas, such as Chunabhatta, have expressed concerns over the growing number of tourists. The constant flow of visitors has led to traffic congestion, noise, and disruptions to daily life. The district administration, while working to complete the construction, has warned visitors to respect the restrictions in place to ensure the smooth operation of the site and to avoid any further incidents.

With the completion of the loop bridge expected in the coming months, the district administration is closely monitoring the situation. Authorities are committed to finalizing construction while implementing necessary safety measures. Efforts to manage the increasing tourist traffic will continue, and further restrictions may be put in place if required to maintain public order and safety at the site.
