Bengal's monsoon departs, IMD predicts chilly winters by December

As the relentless monsoon rains finally recede from West Bengal, leaving behind a trail of soaked landscapes and relieved residents, the air is buzzing with anticipation for the cooler embrace of winter. After weeks of downpours that tested the limits of urban drainage systems and rural farmlands, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has confirmed the official withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from the state on October 10, marking an early exit compared to the typical mid-October timeline. This shift signals the end of the wet season, but for many in Kolkata and beyond. The early retreat to shifting wind patterns and a stronger influence from northern high-pressure systems, hinting at a potentially crisp and timely winter ahead – a welcome change from last year's delayed chill that stretched into December.

Delving deeper into the forecasts, IMD officials emphasize that while the post-monsoon transitional period might bring sporadic thundershowers in the coming week, the stage is set for a gradual cooling trend starting mid-October. IMD says that we can expect temperatures in Kolkata to hover between 28-32°C during the day initially, dropping to 22-25°C at night, before a sharper decline towards November. This projection is bolstered by early indicators of retreating monsoon clouds giving way to clearer skies, allowing northeasterly winds to usher in the first hints of autumnal dryness. For agriculture-dependent regions in south Bengal, this could mean smoother harvesting conditions.

Looking further ahead, the IMD's seasonal outlook paints an optimistic picture for winters, predicting below-average rainfall but above-normal low temperatures from December to February. This comes amid broader climate discussions, as erratic monsoon behaviors – influenced by phenomena like La Niña – continued to reshape seasonal rhythms across India. While the department cautions against complacency with advisories for fog-related travel disruptions, the overall vibe is one of cautious excitement. Bengal transitions from the humidity of retreat to the promise of frost-kissed mornings.
