Bengal sees tourism boost, 3.2 Million tourists arrive last year

West Bengal is experiencing a significant rise in foreign tourist arrivals each year, Tourism Minister Indranil Sen stated in the assembly, presenting supporting data. The minister emphasized that the state's proactive initiatives, particularly the development of eco-friendly facilities tailored for international visitors, have played a crucial role in attracting a growing number of tourists to the region.

According to the minister, a total of 3.2 million tourists visited the state last year. Among these, Bangladeshi tourists accounted for a substantial 182,000. The provision of eco-friendly environments and preferred dining options for foreigners has contributed to their comfort and satisfaction during their stay, leading to repeat visits and positive word-of-mouth.

Responding to a question from BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh on Thursday, the Tourism Minister further elaborated that a total of 2.71 million foreign tourists have visited West Bengal from various countries including Russia, America, and Italy to date. This diverse influx underscores the state's growing appeal as an international tourist destination.

In reply to a question from MLA Biswanath Karak, Tourism Minister Indranil Sen highlighted Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's relentless efforts to make tourist centers more attractive. He pointed out that political instability had previously deterred tourists from visiting North Bengal. However, since the Trinamool Congress came to power in 2011, political stability and security have been ensured in the area, leading to a massive increase in tourist footfall.

Beyond the traditional popularity of Darjeeling and the hills-Dooars region of North Bengal, Digha has emerged as a new wave in West Bengal's tourism landscape. The construction of the Jagannath Temple in Digha has significantly boosted the arrival of foreign tourists to the coastal town. While clear statistics on foreign visitors to Digha are yet to be compiled, the minister expressed confidence that their numbers are set to increase substantially.

The minister also informed the assembly that the state successfully launched a new tourism center in Junglemahal in April 2024. Statistical data indicates that this center maintains an impressive 87 percent occupancy rate, offering visitors easy access to Ayodhya Hills within half an hour.
