Bengal set to establish dedicated NIA court following Supreme Court mandate

Following the Supreme Court's directives to establish dedicated judicial infrastructure for National Investigation Agency cases nationwide, West Bengal is preparing to set up a specialized NIA court. The decision comes as the volume of scheduled offenses and counter-terrorism investigations handled by the agency in the state continues to rise significantly. Currently, NIA matters are assigned to the Chief Judge's bench in the city court building.

The Calcutta High Court will soon determine the precise location and jurisdiction for the upcoming specialized tribunal. Legal experts and agency officials emphasize that dedicated courtrooms strictly focused on NIA proceedings will reduce procedural backlogs and ensure faster disposal of complex cases. The designated judicial framework aims to streamline hearings without overburdening traditional criminal courts.

This judicial expansion follows the state cabinet's recent clearance to notify and establish a dedicated NIA police station. Construction for the police station is slated to begin once administrative procedures wrap up, marking a major strengthening of federal investigative operations in the region. Together, the new police station and dedicated court will form a comprehensive infrastructure for handling high-priority security investigations in West Bengal.
