In a major operation on the morning of 8th May, the Special Task Force (STF) of West Bengal Police arrested an arms smuggler in Malda district, seizing a total of eight illegal firearms. The operation took place near PTS More in Baishnabnagar Police Station area, where the STF had received information about the smuggler’s movement. The arrested individual, Sanjit Kumar Tewari, 38, a resident of Bhagalpur, Bihar, was found in possession of eight pipeguns and one shotter firearm.
Tewari was thoroughly searched after his arrest, and the firearms were recovered from his personal belongings. According to the STF, these weapons were being transported from Bihar to be delivered in Malda, where they were likely intended for further distribution. Authorities have confirmed that a police case has been filed at Baishnabnagar Police Station, and the investigation into the source of the firearms and the network involved is currently ongoing.
The authorities are working to trace the origins of these weapons and identify the recipients in Malda. The operation is part of West Bengal's continued efforts to tackle the illegal arms trade, which has seen increasing concerns in recent months.
