A 22-year-old student of Khudiram Bose College in Mahishadal, Purba Medinipur, died by suicide allegedly after incurring heavy losses on an online betting platform. The student, identified as Abhijit Patra, was found hanging in his hostel room on Wednesday morning. He was a resident of Sabang in Paschim Medinipur and was enrolled in the college’s Physiotherapy Department. A suicide note was recovered from the room, indicating financial distress due to losses from online gambling.
According to college sources, Abhijit did not attend classes on Wednesday and remained unresponsive to repeated phone calls. A junior student tried to contact him but received no reply. Concerned about his whereabouts, students informed the hostel security. A guard went to his room and discovered him hanging from the ceiling. Police from Mahishadal police station were immediately informed and arrived at the spot shortly after. The body was sent to Tamluk for post-mortem examination.
Police officials confirmed that a suicide note was found in the room. In the note, Abhijit wrote that he had recently lost a large sum of money while gambling through an online betting app and had accumulated debt. The note indicated that the financial pressure from this debt had overwhelmed him. Officers stated that the contents of the note are being verified and that further investigation is underway.
Abhijit had been staying in the hostel while pursuing his course at Khudiram Bose College. Authorities have contacted his family in Sabang and informed them about the incident. His phone and other belongings have been seized for forensic examination. Police are looking into the nature of the betting platform mentioned and the extent of his financial transactions related to it.
