Bengal to get its first sports university in Hooghly

The West Bengal Assembly has passed the ‘Netaji Subhas University of Sports and Entrepreneurship’ Bill, marking the formal approval for the state’s first sports-focused university. The institution will be established in Chinsurah, located in Hooghly district, and aims to provide academic and professional training in sports, entrepreneurship, and management.

According to Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sovandeb Chattopadhyay, the university will offer structured training to athletes and is expected to expand opportunities for sports education in the state. He stated in the Assembly, “This sports university will help train more players in Bengal. It is a historic decision that will take the state forward in the field of sports.” Chattopadhyay also mentioned that he had once led a boxing team and linked the initiative to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s vision.

The development and infrastructure responsibilities for the university have been assigned to the Techno India Group. Its chairman, Satyam Roy Chowdhury, was present during the Assembly session and said, “This project has been launched with the support of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. We thank her for this historic initiative.”

Education Minister Bratya Basu stated that the university will not only serve Bengal but also provide national-level contributions to the field of sports education. “This institution will enhance talent and prepare athletes for international competition,” he said, adding that entrepreneurship and sports management will also be part of the curriculum.

The university will be named after Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. It is designed to train sportspersons, promote sports-related entrepreneurship, and offer academic programs in leadership and management. The project is intended to create a comprehensive sports education ecosystem in the region.
