In 2024, Bengali Assistance Centers (BSCs) have witnessed a remarkable 79% increase in financial transactions, growing from ₹169 crore in 2023 to ₹303 crore. This surge reflects the growing demand for public services offered by these centers, which have expanded their role as local service hubs for citizens across Bengal. The increase in revenue is attributed to the rising adoption of BSCs for various essential government services, leading to improved public access to state services.
BSCs currently operate 3,561 centers throughout Bengal, providing a wide array of services across 40 state departments. These services include land and property tax payments, electricity bill settlements, social welfare program applications, and the payment of charges related to building permits and leases. The introduction of e-wallet systems has enabled efficient and secure transactions at these centers. The government has also announced plans to expand the network by opening an additional 1,431 BSCs, aimed at further enhancing public service accessibility in both urban and rural areas.
In addition to general administrative services, specific sectors have seen substantial growth in BSC transactions. The financial sector, which includes utility bill payments and tax settlements, recorded a 34% increase in transactions in 2024. In the health sector, transactions surged by 39%, reflecting an increase in the use of BSCs for accessing healthcare-related services. The agricultural sector experienced a 21% rise in service-related transactions, while the education sector saw a significant 54% growth in transactions through BSCs, reflecting the increasing shift towards digital platforms for educational services and fee payments. Transactions related to social welfare programs also rose by 25%.
Regional data shows that the highest growth in transactions occurred in East Bardhaman and East Midnapore. These areas experienced the most significant rise in the use of BSCs, contributing to the overall increase in statewide transaction volume. As of 2024, more than 1.39 crore citizens have availed themselves of services at the centers, underscoring the widespread acceptance and trust in these facilities. The convenience of having local access points for public services has been especially beneficial to those who previously faced challenges in accessing government offices due to distance or time constraints.
The Bengali Assistance Centers initiative has proven to be a cornerstone of the state government's strategy to streamline public service delivery and reduce dependence on intermediaries. By making government services more accessible, transparent, and efficient, BSCs have contributed to improved governance in Bengal. The expansion of these centers is expected to continue, with plans to reach even more remote areas, further cementing their role in providing essential services to a broader population.
