A housewife allegedly died by suicide in the Aatpur Bankimnagar area under Jagaddal police station in North 24 Parganas, reportedly driven by mounting debt and persistent harassment from lenders. The incident has left the locality in shock, with tension and grief prevailing among residents.
The deceased, identified as Rama Basak, was associated with managing loan transactions for a local self-help group. Reports indicate that while attempting to keep the group’s finances afloat and repay dues, she herself fell into deep debt. Over time, the liabilities reportedly became unmanageable.
According to family members, lenders had been exerting intense pressure on her to return the money. They allege that she was repeatedly threatened and verbally abused in public for failing to repay the loans, pushing her into severe mental distress and fear.
Police from Jagaddal station reached the spot after receiving information and sent the body for post-mortem examination. An investigation is underway to identify those responsible for the alleged harassment, while the family has demanded strict action against the accused.
