Kolkata police arrest two for repeated rape, blackmail of minor girl
The Bidhannagar court on Wednesday issued a fresh summons to Trinamool Congress (TMC) Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee, ordering him to physically appear on July 8 at 10:00 AM to submit a mandatory voice sample. The judicial directive comes after the high-profile politician failed to show up for his scheduled court appearance on Tuesday, June 30. The ongoing legal battle stems from a police complaint regarding highly controversial and provocative remarks made by Banerjee about playing "DJs" during a political election campaign, prompting a formal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) voice-matching inquiry.
Hoping to bypass the local court's initial summons, Banerjee's legal team had immediately approached the Calcutta High Court seeking an emergency stay on the voice sample collection. However, the move resulted in a significant setback when Justice Tirthankar Ghosh refused to intervene in the matter and formally dismissed the petition. Adding to the legal complications, another related petition remains pending before the bench of Justice Joy Sengupta, but because that specific court is currently not in session, Banerjee's lawyers have written directly to the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court requesting an alternate bench assignment.
With the High Court refusing to stall the lower court's mandate, legal experts note that the TMC national general secretary's administrative discomfort has escalated significantly. The Bidhannagar court has reiterated that compliance with the July 8 deadline is mandatory for the collection of forensic evidence by state investigators. The CID intends to cross-reference his live vocal cords with the circulated election campaign recordings to establish structural authenticity, placing substantial political and legal pressure on the ruling party leader.
